Marty Seltman, M.D.

Chair, Department of Family Medicine

Director, West Penn Hospital - Forbes Regional Campus Family Residency Program

Martin Seltman, M.D., is the chairman of the Department of Family Medicine and serves as director of the Forbes Family Practice Residency Program.  He also serves as chairman of the Ethics and Education committees and is a member of the Therapeutics, Bylaws and Medical Executive committees at West Penn Hospital - Forbes Regional Hospital.

Dr. Seltman is a graduate of the Medical College of Pennsylvania and the Shadyside Hospital Family Practice Residency Program in Pittsburgh.  He is certified by the American Board of Family Practice with a Certificate of Added Qualification in Geriatric Medicine.  His experience includes a year on the Papago Indian Reservation in Arizona, as well as three years of practice in an HMO.  Dr. Seltman’s interests include the family in family medicine, geriatrics, a holistic approach to health care and the primary care of HIV-infected and LGBT patients.

Dr. Seltman has served as President of the Family Medicine Education Consortium and on the boards of the Pennsylvania Academy of Family Practice, Eastern Area Adult Services and Persad Center.  His practice has been in Wilkinsburg since 1986 at Metro Family Practice.

An active member of his community, Dr. Seltman serves on the Board of the Friends of the Carnegie Library, the Professional Advisory Committee of Forbes Hospice and the Wilkinsburg Community Health Advisory Board. 

He is married and has two grown children.  His outside activities include hiking, biking, cross country skiing, kayaking, rock climbing, birding, jazz, tea and reading.

Nancy Levine, M.D.

Program Director, Family Medicine Residency

Vice-Chair, Famiy Medicine

Nancy Levine, M.D., an award-winning educator and physician, directs the residency program for The Western Pennsylvania Hospital Department of Family Medicine. Dr. Levine joined West Penn Family Practice in 2000 after serving as vice chair in the Department of Family Medicine for the State University of New York at Stony Brook.

During her tenure at SUNY Stony Brook, Dr. Levine received the Humanism in Medicine Award from the Healthcare Foundation of New Jersey and was named Outstanding Teacher from the University's School of Medicine.

Dr. Levine's special interests include teaching inpatient medicine, family-centered maternity care, evidence-based medicine, communication skills, end-of-life care and office-based procedures.

Lee Erickson, M.D.

Associate Program Director, Family Medicine Residency

Director, Medical Student Clerkship Program

Lee Erickson, M.D., joined the faculty of the West Penn Family Practice Residency Program in 2001 after moving to Pittsburgh to be closer to family. Prior to moving, she was associate residency director and medical director in a busy family practice resident clinic in Cleveland, Ohio. She also served on the faculty of the Family Medicine Department at Case Western Reserve University. A board-certified physician in family medicine, Dr. Erickson holds special interest in patient education, chemical dependency, minor surgery and women's health. She is very committed to teaching residents how to think critically and how to communicate effectively.

 Gwen Breuer, D.O.

Faculty, Family Medicine Residency Program

Gwen Breuer, D.O., joined the faculty of the West Penn Family Practice Residency Program in 2005 after completing her residency in the program. During her residency, Dr. Breuer served as chief resident and also received the Academic Achievement Award from the faculty in 2004 and 2005. She is board certified by both the American Board of Family Medicine and the American Board of Osteopathic Family Medicine.

Dr. Breuer grew up in the small town of Ford City, Pennsylvania, along the Allegheny River in Armstrong County. She received her bachelor’s degree in Biology with highest honors from Saint Vincent College in 1997. Between college and medical school, she completed a year of research and also coached volleyball and basketball. Dr. Breuer received her medical degree from Lake Erie College of Osteopathic Medicine. 

Dr. Breuer is very excited to be a faculty member and join her teachers here at the residency program. She loves Family Medicine because of the variety of constant intellectual stimulation it poses, the special relationships formed with patients, and the ability to serve as the “point guard” of a patient’s healthcare team.  She looks forward to teaching the many unique aspects of this great specialty. Most of all, she is thrilled that she will have the privilege of continuing to care for her wonderful patients at West Penn Family Practice. 


Maria Dugan, D.O.

Faculty, Family Medicine Residency Program                  Director, Osteopathic Medical Education

Maria   Dugan, D.O., came to West Penn Family Practice in 1998 from the State University of New York at Brooklyn, where she was an assistant professor of family practice. In addition to teaching medical students and residents, she was responsible for coordinating the inpatient family practice service. She carries similar responsibilities at West Penn.

A native of King of Prussia, Pennsylvania, Dr. Dugan graduated from Bucknell University and the Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine. Upon completing her residency at the college, she served as a staff family physician and then as director of adult services in a U.S. Army field hospital in Germany. She also served in the Persian Gulf during the Desert Shield/Storm conflict. She spent her final year in the military serving in the Family Medicine Clinic at the Army War College in Carlisle.

In 1993, Dr. Dugan moved to Brooklyn to join her husband, an oral and maxillofacial surgeon, who now has offices in the North Hills and Butler County. Dr. Dugan is board certified in family medicine and has a special interest in teaching adult inpatient medicine and women's health.

Sandra Cromo, M.D.


Faculty, Family Medicine Residency Program


Sandra Cromo, M.D., joined West Penn Family Practice in 2004.  A board-certified family physician, she grew up in Beaver County and graduated from the Pennsylvania State University.  She received her medical degree from Jefferson Medical College in Philadelphia in 1987, and completed her residency in Family Practice at Duke University Medical Center in Durham, N.C., in 1990.

Dr. Cromo practiced in Sharon for three years prior to moving to the Pittsburgh area, where she has gained a variety of experience in private practice. She enjoys caring for patients of all ages.

Dr. Cromo also has experience in Occupational Medicine, including pre-employment examinations, as well as injury evaluation and management.

Matthew StantsPainter, D.O.

Faculty, Family Medicine Residency

Matthew Stantspainter, D.O., joined the West Penn Family Medicine faculty after completion of residency in 2006.  He received his medical degree from the Lake Erie College of Osteopathic Medicine in 2003 and completed a residency at The Western Pennsylvania Hospital Family Medicine program in 2006.

Dr. Stantspainter has a special interest in musculoskeletal, as well as osteopathic medicine.

Robert L. Sukolsky, MA, NCC

Behavioral Science Coordinator

Robert Sukolsky, MA, NCC, has twenty-five years experience providing individual, family and marital therapy to children and families across a variety of settings, including residential, office, school and home-based programming.

In addition to his full-time faculty position within the Family Practice Residency Program, Mr. Sukolsky is an adjunct instructor at both Duquesne University in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, and Indiana University of Pennsylvania in Indiana, Pennsylvania.  He teaches graduate-level courses in each of the schools' respective Counselor Education Programs.  Mr. Sukolsky previously taught graduate courses at Seton Hill University in Greensburg, Pennsylvania.  He continues to serve as a clinical consultant/trainer for the Western Psychiatric Institute and Clinic's Family Based Mental Health Training Program, a position he has held for the past four years.

A Nationally Certified Counselor (NCC), Mr. Sukolsky is a native of Canonsburg, Pennsylvania, and a graduate of Indiana University of Pennsylvania, receiving a Master in Community Counseling degree in 1991.

Prior to joining the West Penn Family Practice in 2006, he served as director of Family Based Mental Health Services of a community-based program in the Pittsburgh area.

Mr. Sukolsky's clinical and philosophical orientation is toward family systems theory.  His professional passion lies in teaching, training and providing clinical supervision with a special interst in systems theory and patient/physician interactions.
