Innovative Progressive Curriculum

We've designed our curriculum to give you a strong, broad base of training in the discipline of Family Medicine. You will receive superb exposure to the basic disciplines in the first year, followed by more responsibility and an increasing focus on outpatient care. Within this context, we have several areas of particular strength and innovation, including behavioral medicine, office-based procedures, community medicine, palliative care, addiction medicine, and obstetrics. We are the only residency program in Pittsburgh with its own obstetrics rotation on site. Our curriculum is evidence-based, and has a strong focus on continuous quality improvement. Equally important is our commitment to continuous improvement of your education. We work closely with our residents to improve the curriculum as the bodies of educational and medical knowledge evolve.

Work Load

The pace is reasonable and includes a night-float system to help you avoid undue stress and fatigue, and the structure is flexible. As with many programs, call is no more than every fourth night the first year. Several rotations in the second and third years require in-house call every fourth night. Otherwise, call during those years is every two to four weeks. Nearly all required rotations are on site to minimize travel time, except those which, by their nature, require settings in the community.
