What You Will Find at West Penn
Experienced Faculty
The faculty of The Western Pennsylvania Hospital Family Medicine Residency Program is comprised of experienced educators and clinicians with diverse interests and backgrounds. Our level of experience spans the spectrum from new graduate to seasoned veteran with more than 30 years experience in the field. You will have published authors and winners of awards, including the Pennsylvania Academy of Family Physicians' 2001Family Physician of the Year, as your teachers. Members of the faculty have added expertise in a number of areas, including obstetrics, palliative care, addiction medicine, and evidence-based medicine. And with a 2:1 resident to faculty ratio, the West Penn program provides you a higher degree of personal attention than usually found in training programs.
Flexibility
The only traditions we are bound to are those of excellence in teaching and outstanding service to our patients. We recognize and appreciate the individual needs and the unique goals of our trainees; if you are creative, we are flexible. We will work with your learning needs to help you fulfill your professional and educational goals. Our family doctors are respected members of the medical staff with full privileges who work side by side with every other discipline to nurture your growth and development. The program is innovative, with a flexible curriculum structure and strong clinical services with optimum variety and volume of patients.
Diversity
The Western Pennsylvania Hospital Family Medicine Residency Program takes advantage of Pittsburgh's diverse population to offer you access to unique experiences in rural sites and inner city sites serving the homeless and disenfranchised. Our residents work in a school-based clinic serving high school students, a woman's shelter, a rape crisis center, and a community "free clinic." By combining these experiences with the opportunities provided at a tertiary medical center, our program offers everything you need for an exceptional foundation in family medicine.
Hands-on Patient Experience
At the Family Health Center, you will care for your own panel of patients while working alongside teachers who act as guides, role models and partners. The health center is located just a few minutes from the main campus in a vibrant, urban residential neighborhood whose members represent a broad spectrum of ethnic, age and economic groups. Our practice is a private practice in the community, with a patient population that is truly diverse; it encompasses pediatrics to geriatrics, multiple socio-economic levels, and a variety of ethnicities. The level of continuity of care is high, allowing you to really get to know your own patients during your training. Dedicated procedure time permits you to become skilled in office procedures at a comfortable pace. The ratio of faculty preceptor to resident is highly favorable and enables a maximum of individual teaching opportunities.
