Allegheny General Hospital Search:

A Letter from the Chairman

Elliot Goldberg , MD, FACP
Chair, Department of Medicine

The Western Pennsylvania Hospital, western Clinical Campus of Temple University School of Medicine, offers a full range of medical education opportunities, including a large number of residency and fellowship programs.

Consider The Western Pennsylvania Hospital for internal medicine residency and fellowship training. The Department of Medicine offers a three-year categorical internal medicine residency, a primary care internal medicine residency, and a one-year osteopathic internship as well as integrated fellowship programs with our sister institution Allegheny General Hospital in cardiology, interventional cardiology, hematology/oncology, and pulmonary medicine.   With nearly 50 full-time faculty and a large group of voluntary physicians as well as clinical research, the Department offers an unusually rich clinical and didactic educational experience. Indicators of excellence in our program include a 97% three-year rolling pass rate on the American Board of Internal Medicine examination and an excellent five-year accreditation with commendation from the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME).

The West Penn Allegheny Health System recently constructed a Simulation Center in order to improve medical education and improve patient safety. The center is located within the facilities of The Western Pennsylvania Hospital School of Nursing.   The simulation training center is an essential training tool, serving all West Penn Allegheny Health System (WPAHS) facilities.  Please see our virtual hospital at www.westpennstar.org

West Penn Hospital has been named as a Blue Distinction CenterSM for Cardiac Care by the Blue Cross and Blue Shield Association (BCBSA).  West Penn was the first hospital in the region to incorporate use of advanced 64- slice CT scanning technology into the diagnosis of cardiac diseases.  The Western Pennsylvania Hospital has been awarded Magnet recognition status from the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC).  West Penn Hospital is the first and only hospital in western Pennsylvania to receive this prestigious designation and is now among the top 3 percent of all healthcare facilities in the world recognized by the ANCC for excellence in nursing and quality patient care. The Western Pennsylvania Hospital is one of just 16 major teaching hospitals in the country, and the only one in Pittsburgh, to be recognized by the Solucient Institute as among the country's 100 Top Hospitals overall and as one of the 100 Top Hospitals in heart care in 2003.  In 2004, The Western Pennsylvania Hospital in Pittsburgh became the only major teaching hospital in Pennsylvania to be recognized by the Solucient Institute for the third consecutive year as among the country's 100 Top Hospitals for overall performance. Previously, Solucient recognized West Penn Hospital as among the nation's best hospitals for heart care and for intensive care.  Also in 2004, Solucient named The West Penn Hospital - Forbes Regional Campus one of the nation's 100 Top Performance Improvement Leader hospitals.

The Hospital also has one of the leading centers in the country for bone marrow transplantation and maintains the region's largest dialysis network. Among its other nationally known tertiary care programs are an affiliate of the Joslin Center for Diabetes in Boston, a center for chronic liver disease treatment, and a major sleep laboratory. Elective opportunities permit residents to design programs with emphasis in primary care, women's health, hospitalist care, clinical or laboratory research, or preparation for subspecialty training.

Among our other innovative programs are a faculty-resident practice office, a home visit program, a community-based geriatrics program, an adolescent medicine clinic in a high school, a homeless clinic, a private office-based continuity experience in general medicine, a private office experience in medical and surgical subspecialties and gynecology, and one of the first hospitalist programs in the area.

I personally take an active interest in each resident's career. We have a strong advisory system. Many of our residents go on to careers in primary care with the active assistance of the Hospital. Although many of our residents go on to university fellowships elsewhere (see the list in the following section) we give preference to our residents for our highly regarded fellowships in cardiology, interventional cardiology, hematology/oncology, and pulmonary medicine.

The Western Pennsylvania Hospital is located in a pleasant, tree-lined, middle-income neighborhood in the heart of the city of Pittsburgh.  The city is noted for its low crime rate, inexpensive housing, large university population, fine cultural facilities, and beautiful countryside.  Most residents live in the neighborhood and participate in an active social program.  Our excellent benefit package for house staff includes in-house exercise facilities, an on-site day care center, and complimentary meals and parking. An attractive on-call schedule includes a night-float system.
