Why Choose The Western Pennsylvania Hospital for Your Osteopathic Traditional Rotating Internship Program?

In 1996 the American Osteopathic Association (AOA) approved The Western Pennsylvania Hospital's rotating internship program with the Lake Erie College of Osteopathic Medicine (LECOM) as the sponsoring academic institution.

The Western Pennsylvania Hospital, the oldest teaching hospital in the region, has a distinguished history of providing care of the highest quality to patients and families in their communities. Should you choose to participate in the West Penn Osteopathic Rotating Internship Program, you will enjoy unparalleled opportunities to interact with outstanding faculty in a broad range of specialties, caring for a diverse patient population. Interns who complete the West Penn Hospital American Osteopathic Association--approved Osteopathic Rotating Internship may credit this experience toward the American Board of Internal Medicine requirements for admission to the certifying examination for West Penn's Internal Medicine Residency Program or toward the American Board of Family Practice requirements for admission to the certifying examination for any family practice residency program, including the West Penn Family Practice Residency Program. This requires use of elective time towards either discipline.

West Penn's strong heritage of outstanding graduate medical education has led to the development of highly respected and fully accredited residency programs in Internal Medicine, Family Practice, Obstetrics and Gynecology, Surgery, Radiology, Anesthesiology, and, through affiliation with the University of Pittsburgh, Emergency Medicine. These residency programs are open to those who complete the Osteopathic Rotating Internship Program at West Penn. We also have fellowship programs in the subspecialties of:

  • Cardiology
  • Interventional Cardiology
  • Gastroenterology
  • Hematology/Oncology
  • Pulmonary Medicine
  • Interventional Radiology
  • Radiologic Imaging
  • Women's Imaging

The Environment

As a participant in the American Osteopathic Association Rotating Internship Program at West Penn, you will have an exceptional opportunity to bring the knowledge and skills you acquired in medical school to life.

Osteopathic rotating interns enjoy a friendly and close working relationship with fellow residents, full-time faculty, the program director, and the attending physicians who serve as clinical faculty. Their emphasis on high-quality patient care and their concern and interest in each intern's education make for a nurturing as well as challenging environment in which to learn and work.

Facilities

Facilities for patient care at The Western Pennsylvania Hospital are exceptional. The new state-of-the-art Patient Care Tower incorporates the latest technology to support the Hospital's patient-focused care concept: providing excellent service with competence, compassion, and courtesy for the comfort and convenience of patients.

The Osteopathic Rotating Internship Program is designed to meet your needs for a well-rounded experience, without excessive exposure to any single disease or subspecialty. Full support services, such as a 24-hour phlebotomy team, ensure that interns' time and talents are used wisely. Scheduling is individualized, and a reasonable call schedule, including a "night float" system, ensures that interns have time to enjoy the many cultural and entertainment opportunities available in the western Pennsylvania region.

The Program

Applicants to the West Penn Hospital Osteopathic Rotating Internship Program will be screened and interns will be selected by the Intern Selection Committee.

Interns are expected to complete all assignments in the following curriculum. However, the Program's director of medical education can individualize the intern's schedule.

Osteopathic interns may expect to have the same experiences and opportunities during these assignments as are offered to allopathic physicians during their internship year. In addition they will participate in regularly scheduled OMT seminars and as well as the OMT Clinic.
