The Western Pennsylvania Hospital has a long history of providing outstanding graduate medical education programs in a variety of specialties. In affiliation with Temple University School of Medicine, the Hospital offers a full range of medical education opportunities, including a large number of residency and fellowship programs. During your transtional year, you may be assigned to a clinical team that includes physicians in these West Penn physician training programs:
- Residents in Anesthesiology, Internal Medicine, Obstetrics and Gynecology, Radiology (Diagnostic), and Surgery
- Fellows in Cardiovascular Disease, Interventional Cardiology, Gastroenterology, Pulmonary Medicine, Hematology/Oncology, Nephrology, Vascular and Interventional Radiology, Imaging (Ultrasound, Body CT, and MRI), and Women's Imaging
Transitional Year Program residents enjoy a close working relationship with fellow residents, teaching faculty, the program director, and attending physicians, who emphasize and value quality patient care and who are concerned and interested in the education program.

The Transitional Year Program
The Transitional Year Program at West Penn is sponsored by the Department of Medicine, with participation by the departments of Anesthesiology, Emergency Medicine, Obstetrics and Gynecology, Pediatrics, Radiology, Surgery, and others.
Eight months of meaningful patient care are required for residents choosing the Transitional Year Program. This must include the following rotations:

Evaluations
Each trainee's performance is reviewed monthly by the faculty at the quarterly educational committee meeting. Semi-annually, the program director will meet with each resident individually to review his or her progress. Semi-annually, a global evaluation will be submitted to the respective residency program (this will be done quarterly for the anesthesia program as required).
Application Information
The Transitional Year Residency program only accepts applications through the Electronic Residency Application Service (ERAS). Once the application is completed our staff reviews the application and applies the specific criteria that we use for granting interviews. Personal interviews are by invitation only and are required for acceptance to our program. Deadline for applying to our Transitional Year Residency Program is December 31, 2009. Applications are now being accepted for the 2010-2011 academic year.

- Official transcript from your medical school
- Dean's letter
- Three letters of recommendation (at least one Internal Medicine)
- USMLE Board scores

Interviews:
The Department of Medicine conducts interviews on Mondays and Fridays from November to early February. Our program offers PGY-I positions through the National Resident Matching Program (NRMP). Interviews for the Transitional Year Program begins at 8:30 a.m. and lasts until 1:00 p.m.
