Meet the Program Director

H. Scott Beasley , M.D.
The Western Pennsylvania Hospital offers a unique opportunity to study, learn and practice radiology in a highly sub-specialized hospital setting that combines the advantages of a university model practice setting with those of a smaller and more intimate program. The limited number of Fellows assures the resident of ample opportunities to perform imaging procedures and to be directly supervised by experienced faculty.

In this collegial environment, academic and professional growth is stimulated, and as a result, the graduating resident is highly competent and confident in the transition to fellowship or to the practice of radiology. Our department has state-of-the-art technology and was among the earliest of hospitals to transition into all digital imaging. Attesting to the excellence of our staff, we are proud that we still offer full service medical imaging. Included among the areas maintained by our department are Nuclear Medicine, Cardiac MRI, Obstetrical Ultrasound, Vascular Ultrasound, and full service Vascular and Interventional Radiology.

Many of these areas have disappeared from radiology practices at other hospitals and many universities as well. The opportunity to train in all areas of radiology under the direct supervision of radiologists rather than cardiologists or obstetricians is a distinct advantage.

Our hospital has significant breadth and depth of medical expertise in Cardiac and Vascular Surgery, Thoracic Surgery, Bariatric and Laparoscopic Surgery, High Risk Obstetrics, Neonatology, Burn Trauma, Bone Marrow Transplantation, and the Institute for Computer Assisted Orthopedic Surgery. Overall, there is a broad and diverse case mix encompassing both urban hospital-type patients and those more complicated patients referred to a tertiary care hospital. This provides abundant case material affording the resident ample exposure to all facets of radiology and associated pathology.

The faculty is highly committed to resident education. The twice-a-day conferences are almost exclusively faculty conducted and are both didactic and case-based. Residents are also expected to actively participate in their education and development. They will prepare cases for follow-up conferences and participate in Journal Club. As a clinical campus for Temple University School of Medicine, medical students and non-radiology residents frequently rotate through our department, affording the more senior resident an opportunity for teaching. Scholarly activity, both within the department and in collaboration with other departments, is available and encouraged, but is not mandatory.

Pittsburgh is an affordable and attractive city. Ample housing is available nearby to the hospital. There are beautiful parks and hills for a plethora of outdoor activities. Top-notch cultural events are easily accessible. Major sports teams and a diverse and exciting night life with excellent quality restaurants will ensure that your four years at The Western Pennsylvania Hospital Radiology Department are a rich and rewarding experience.
