Why Choose The Western Pennsylvania Hospital for Your Radiology Residency?
The Western Pennsylvania Hospital, chartered in 1848 as the first
public hospital west of the Allegheny Mountains, has been continuously
involved in graduate medical education since 1874.
In affiliation with Temple University School of Medicine, the
Hospital offers a full range of medical education opportunities,
including a large number of residency and fellowship programs.
The Diagnostic Radiology Residency Program at West Penn Hospital
offers the opportunity to train in a highly subspecialized, tertiary
care department with recognized national leaders in several areas of
radiology. With state-of-the-art equipment in a community-based
hospital, the program offers university equivalent training with a
strong emphasis on academic excellence.
The Program
Each year, three new outstanding candidates who have completed
their initial clinical year are selected for the Diagnostic Radiology
Residency Program at The Western Pennsylvania Hospital. During their
four year radiology residency, residents rotate through the sections
of the department that encompass all aspects of diagnostic
radiology. These rotations include: chest radiology, skeletal
radiology, gastrointestinal radiology, genitourinary radiology,
pediatric radiology, head and neck radiology, neuroradiology,
angiography/interventional radiology, breast imaging, ultrasound, body
CT, body MRI and nuclear radiology.
The first year is strongly grounded in the basics of radiology. In the second
through fourth years, diagnostic radiology residents build on their subspecialty
experiences, including 12 weeks at The Children's Hospital of Philadelphia.
During the third year, the residents spend six weeks at the Armed Forces
Institute of Pathology (AFIP).

Teaching
An introductory course for first-year residents in basic
radiologic physics is presented to familiarize the entering resident with basic
principles of physics and radiation safety. This course is followed by a
two-year comprehensive course for first-and second-year residents in all areas
of the physics of imaging and radiobiology. A separate 50-hour intensive course
is provided for residents in preparation for the American Board of Radiology
examination.
Following subspecialty lines, two conferences a day are
given. They are most often presentations by the subspecialty staff members.
Formal lectures in subspecialty areas also are given by the faculty. Radiology
Grand Rounds cover subjects of interest in all subspecialties.
The faculty members of the Department of Radiology are
highly dedicated physicians who are subspecialty and fellowship trained.
Together with the teaching conferences and our Visiting
Professor Series, the essential core of the program is the large volume of cases
that will provide residents their needed experience with a wide variety of
pathological entities.
Research
The Western Pennsylvania Hospital has made a major
commitment to the development of high-quality clinical basic science research.
More than $8 million has been invested by The Western Pennsylvania Hospital
Foundation in a new basic science facility accredited for animal research and
offering modern laboratory space to faculty and house staff.
Residents are encouraged to become involved in research
projects with faculty members, to submit abstracts and papers, and to present
their work at local and national meetings.
Faculty
The Department of Radiology has state-of-the-art equipment
throughout all divisions. Furthermore, all areas of imaging remain within the
Department of Radiology, including cardiac nuclear examinations, obstetrical
ultrasound, Doppler ultrasound, and all interventional procedures.
Faculty include:
H. Scott Beasley,
M.D.
Chairman,
Department of Radiology,
Chief, Division of Diagnostic Radiology and Medical Imaging
