Allegheny General Hospital Search:

Progression

To progress through the School of Nursing program, students must meet academic and other criteria, including the following:

Academic Criteria

Academic criteria for progression are listed in the section Academic Policies.

Clearances - Second Year

All Second-Year students must reapply for clearances:

  • If a Pennsylvania resident, the student reapplies for the Pennsylvania Child Abuse History Clearance and the Pennsylvania State Criminal History report.
  • Students apply for an FBI Background Check; for the process, see below, "FBI Background Check".

The new clearance(s) must be submitted when starting the Fall Term in order to participate in clinical activities.

Any situation that may warrant a change in the current clearance (such as a misdemeanor and/or felony conviction) must be brought immediately to the attention of the Director, School of Nursing. Failure to report could result in dismissal from the program.

FBI Background Check

As of July 1, 2008, it is Pennsylvania law that anyone working with children must be fingerprinted and have an FBI (Federal Bureau of Investigation) clearance. All School of Nursing students take pediatrics in the Second Year and will need to obtain this clearance over the summer before the Second Year.

NOTE:  It takes 4 to 6 weeks to get the results of the FBI Background Check.

No one will start the Second Year without submitting the FBI Background Check to the School of Nursing.

The School of Nursing participates in an Internet/Web-based service whereby the student can pay the fee for the FBI Background Check by credit card and make his/her appointment for the fingerprinting process on-line.

Health Insurance

A student must be covered by personal healthcare insurance throughout the program.

A student is required to keep healthcare insurance information current. Changes in health plans are to be reported to the School secretary.

Validation of healthcare insurance coverage must be provided at registration each term.

Professional and Personal Liability Insurance

All students enrolled in the clinical nursing courses are required annually to purchase professional and personal liability insurance to protect themselves against any claims brought against them. A student will not be permitted to participate in any clinical experience without validation of personal liability insurance.

The limitations of insurance coverage are $1 million per occurrence and $6 million as an aggregate. Dates of coverage are to include the entire length of the program. Validation of liability insurance coverage must be provided by the first day of each Fall Term.
