Housing and Parking

Medical students, residents and fellows planning to study at The Western Pennsylvania Hospital often ask about housing options in the area. The Hospital is located between Friendship and Liberty avenues and Millvale and Mathilda avenues in the Bloomfield section of Pittsburgh, a pleasant residential neighborhood with rental units at reasonable rates. Surrounding and nearby neighborhoods in the East End of Pittsburgh include East Liberty, Highland Park, Oakland, Shadyside and Squirrel Hill. Each of these areas offer a unique atmosphere and numerous apartments for rent, as well as condominiums and houses for sale.

Bloomfield has a large ethnic population and many older homes with apartments that feature high ceilings and original woodwork. This largely residential area is an attractive option for those seeking modest and comfortable living quarters.

Highland Park is a largely residential area with many apartments in well-maintained homes, featuring Victorian-style architecture.

Shadyside features an upscale shopping and entertainment hub that draws visitors from outside of the city as well as surrounding neighborhoods. The homes in this area are popular choices for young professionals. There are also numerous apartment buildings in this mostly residential area within a mile of West Penn Hospital.

Squirrel Hill has a very active business and shopping hub and is within two miles of several Pittsburgh universities, attracting many university students, faculty and other professionals.

Short-Term Housing

Medical students completing rotations at The Western Pennsylvania Hospital Clinical Campus are offered housing free of charge in the School of Nursing dormitory for the duration of their rotations.

The School of Nursing dormitory is located directly across the street from the main Hospital building.  Housing amenities in the School of Nursing dormitory include the following:

• Single private sleeping rooms (minimal linen provided, student desk, dresser, and twin bed)
• Shared shower and bathroom facilities
• Shared kitchen facilities (microwave and refrigerator)
• Full cooking facility located on 1st floor of the dormitory
• Computer lab. (24-hour access)
• Lounge area with cable TV access
• Coin-operated laundry facilities

Parking

Parking is provided for medical students free of charge.

Students requiring parking must provide the following information to the Office of the Associate Dean, Temple University School of Medicine Clinical Campus at The Western Pennsylvania Hospital:

• Make, model, year, and color of vehicle
• License plate number and state
