Undergraduate Medical Education Opportunities at

The Western Pennsylvania Hospital

The Western Pennsylvania Hospital, where the first medical school west of the Allegheny Mountains (now the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine) was founded in 1874, continues as a strong leader in academic medicine. 

Today, West Penn Hospital offers accredited and well-recognized programs for undergraduate and graduate medical education, health sciences education, and research. 

As a clinical campus for Temple University School of Medicine, The Western Pennsylvania Hospital offers a full-time program for Temple students to complete their third and fourth years of medical school at the Hospital, as well as rotations for medical students from Temple and other LCME- and AOA-approved medical schools.

West Penn Hospital has an NLNAC-accredited diploma School of Nursing and serves as a clinical site for the Indiana University of Pennsylvania School of Respiratory Care and for the Penn State/New Kensington School of Radiologic Technology.

Up to 64 students (32 third-year students and 32 fourth-year students) may complete all of their 3rd-year and 4th-year rotations at the West Penn Clinical Campus of TUSM.  Beginning in 2008, students will be admitted directly to the West Penn Campus upon admission to Temple University School of Medicine.

Other third-year and fourth-year students may choose to complete elective rotations at The Western Pennsylvania Hospital Clinical Campus as space is available.

The wide variety of primary / secondary and tertiary care referral programs at The Western Pennsylvania Hospital provides an unusually broad range of interesting and challenging experiences for medical students.  During required clinical rotations, unique experiences are available to students that contribute to their understanding of didactic learning sessions.

In addition to the required clinical experiences, elective rotations in state-of-the-art specialties provide opportunities to complete a well-rounded medical education experience and prepare students for their residency years.  The following electives are currently offered:

Department of Anesthesiology

The Department of Anesthesiology rotation for medical students includes experiences in preoperative assessment, anesthesia during surgery for a wide range of patients and conditions, and postoperative care.

Department of Family Practice

The rotation in the Department of Family Practice includes experiences in outpatient care and inpatient care for patients of a variety of ages and with a range of healthcare needs.

Department of Medicine

Rotations for medical students in the Department of Medicine include the following:

  • Cardiology

  • Cardiac Care Unit

  • Endocrinology

  • Gastroenterology
  • Geriatric Medicine

  • Hematology/Oncology

  • Infectious Diseases

  • Medical Intensive Care

  • Palliative Care

  • Pulmonary Medicine

  • Nephrology (Renal)

  • Rheumatology

  • Sub-internships

During rotations, medical students benefit from the expert knowledge and broad experiences of faculty physicians and other healthcare team members and opportunities to participate in all aspects of the care of patients with complex health conditions.

Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology

Medical students may choose the following rotations in the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology:

  • Obstetrics/ Gynecology Ambulatory Care

  • Benign Gynecology

  • Gynecologic Oncology

  • Maternal/ Fetal Medicine – High-Risk Obstetrics

  • Reproductive Genetics

Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine

Medical student may serve a rotation in the Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine, which offers the most advanced technology and expertise for anatomic and clinical pathology.  The department also provides blood bank services and sophisticated cytogenetic studies.

Department of Pediatrics

Medical students may complete a rotation in the Department of Pediatrics' Neonatal Intensive Care Unit at West Penn Hospital.  This renowned Level III unit cares for about 500 seriously ill newborns a year, about half of whom are transferred by the Unit's Neonatal Transport Team from other hospitals in the region.

Department of Radiology

The Department of Radiology includes the divisions of Radiation Oncology and Diagnostic Imaging and a Radiation Physics section. 

West Penn Hospital has the latest in diagnostic imaging equipment, including a 64-slice computed tomography (CT) system.   The Acquilion 64-slice scanner delivers unmatched image quality and allows for more precise diagnosis of all types of diseases.  With a scan time of just 10 seconds, West Penn's CT scanner can capture images of organs before the organs move, dramatically improving image quality.

Department of Surgery

The following rotations are available to medical students through the Department of Surgery:

  • Burn Trauma

  • Cardiothoracic Surgery

  • Colorectal Surgery
  • General Surgery

  • Minimally Invasive Surgery
  • Neurosurgery

  • Ophthalmology
  • Orthopaedic Surgery

  • Otolaryngology (ENT)

  • Plastic Surgery

  • Surgical Critical Care

  • Urology

  • Vascular Surgery

An individual application must be completed for each requested elective when requesting more than one.
