Founded in 1848 as Pittsburgh's first chartered public hospital, The Western Pennsylvania Hospital in Pittsburgh is a 500-bed academic medical center that has been regionally and nationally recognized for excellence in nursing, bariatric surgery, bone marrow and cell transplantation, burn care, cardiovascular care, joint care, and reproductive medicine.

West Penn Hospital is the first hospital in Pittsburgh and western Pennsylvania to be awarded Magnet recognition status by the American Nurses Credentialing Center in 2006. This prestigious 4-year designation recognizes excellence in nursing.

West Penn Hospital annually admits more than 17,000 patients and logs nearly 28,000 emergency visits and more than 10,000 surgeries.

West Penn Hospital is a member of West Penn Allegheny Health System, a physician-led organization committed to improving the health of people living in the Western Pennsylvania region.

The hospital has been named on Thomson Reuters’ Top 100 Hospitals list four times since 2001. For the past three consecutive years, HealthGrades has ranked West Penn’s weight loss surgery program as the best in Pennsylvania.

West Penn is also one of just 23 hospitals in the country and the only healthcare provider in the region to win the 2009 Award for Quality from Premier healthcare alliance.

West Penn's Burn Center was the first and is the only burn program in the region to receive verification honors by the Committee on Trauma of the American College of Surgeons and the American Burn Association.

West Penn Hospital's obstetrics program is one of the busiest in the region and its neonatal intensive care unit is one of the region's largest referral resources for sick newborns.  West Penn Hospital also is home to the patient offices for the Jones Institute at West Penn Allegheny Health System, an affiliate of the renowned Jones Institute for Reproductive Medicine of the Eastern Virginia Medical School.

The Western Pennsylvania Cancer Institute provides the most advanced diagnostic and treatment services for all types of cancer, including lung, esophageal, breast, gynecologic, prostate, colorectal and blood-borne cancers. The Cancer Institute has earned national recognition for its bone marrow transplant program, one of the largest in Pennsylvania. The Institute also boasts leading-edge radiation oncology services and was the second cancer center in the world to offer Intensity Modulated Radiation Therapy. Patients have access to the latest treatment protocols through the Cancer Institute's participation in national research groups such as the Cancer and Leukemia Group B, American College of Surgeons Oncology Group, and Radiation Therapy Oncology Group.

The Western Pennsylvania Hospital - Forbes Regional Campus offers a complete array of surgical, medical and rehabilitative care and has one of the region's busiest emergency departments.  The Forbes Regional Campus also offers a Lifestyle Center dedicated to providing unique opportunities to help patients improve their health with personalized diet and fitness programs.

Part of West Penn Allegheny Health System, West Penn Hospital is a leader in the education of healthcare professionals, providing clinical training to third- and fourth-year medical students of the Philadelphia-based Temple University School of Medicine.  West Penn also provides education programs for nurses and other members of the healthcare team, including a School of Nursing (affiliated with Clarion University of Pennsylvania); a School of Respiratory Care (affiliated with Indiana University of Pennsylvania); and the Pennsylvania State University/Western Pennsylvania Hospital Program of Radiologic Technology.
