Tragic Death of Husband, NBC News journalist David Bloom, led her to Speak Out About Silent, Serious Medical Condition

Who: Melanie Bloom, whose husband David died of deep-vein thrombosis (DVT) at age 39 while covering the war in Iraq as an NBC News correspondent.

What: Ms. Bloom will speak about DVT and her personal experience.
Attendees will be afforded demonstrations of venous Doppler technology, which can be used to detect DVT.
The public is also invited to take a computerized test that will assess their risk of having or developing DVT.

When: Ms. Bloom will speak at 10 a.m.
She will be available for interviews before and after her talk.
DVT risk assessment will be available from 9 a.m. to noon

Where: West Penn Hospital in Pittsburgh’s Bloomfield neighborhood. Free parking will be available in the garage at Liberty Avenue and South Millvale Street.

Why: The incidence of DVT can be reduced if patients and caregivers recognize the risk factors, warning signs and symptoms. Ms. Bloom’s ongoing hope is that she can continue to raise public awareness of this silent, serious medical condition.
