On December 7, 2006, The Western Pennsylvania Hospital achieved Magnet Recognition status from the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC). 

 

West Penn Hospital is the first hospital in Pittsburgh and western Pennsylvania to receive this prestigious recognition, which has been achieved by only about 5% of all healthcare facilities in the nation.

About Nursing Services at West Penn Hospital

In addition to tertiary care for adults, infants, and children, West Penn Hospital provides obstetric services and inpatient as well as outpatient rehabilitation services.

Registered nurses practice in a wide variety of departments, including:

  • Ambulatory Care

  • Cardiac and Critical Care Services

  • Cardiac Catheterization Laboratory

  • Digestive Diagnostic and Treatment Center

  • Electrophysiology Laboratory

  • Emergency Department

  • Home Health Agency

  • Joslin Diabetes Center

  • Maternal, Child, and Women's Services

  • Medical-Surgical/Oncology

  • Perioperative Services

  • Radiation Oncology

  • Radiology Services

  • Registry (supplemental staffing)

  • Rehabilitation Services

Nursing education and development specialists support clinical and educational activities at the unit/department, division, and hospital-wide levels.

Programs to help professional nurses advance their clinical knowledge and maintain clinical competencies include but are not limited to the following:

West Penn boasts a large number of advanced practice nurses, including certified registered nurse practitioners (CRNPs), certified registered nurse anesthetists (CRNAs), and other nurses practicing in advanced roles.

West Penn nursing staff members may hold faculty appointments in The Western Pennsylvania Hospital School of Nursing, and numerous West Penn nurses serve as preceptors for students in West Penn's or another professional school of nursing or as mentors for nurses advancing their careers at West Penn or seeking specialty certification or another advancement.
