Thoracic Surgery

Surgeons at the West Penn Center for Lung and Thoracic Disease specialize in the operative management of disorders of the chest, including lung cancer, mediastinal masses, and disorders such as myasthenia gravis, pleural diseases, esophageal cancer, and benign esophageal diseases, including GERD. Our team performs a high volume of thoracic surgeries and continually works to reduce disease-related complications and optimize treatment results.

Surgeons at the West Penn Center for Lung and Thoracic Disease undergo extensive training in minimally invasive, video-assisted thoracic surgery (VATS). VATS involves the use of television camera visualization and the introduction of surgical instrumentation through 1-inch incisions in the chest. This less invasive surgical procedure can accurately diagnose and effectively treat a wide range of chest disorders which previously required a large open incision.

When VATS procedures can be used, patients experience less blood loss and pain, heal faster and typically can go home sooner. Many VATS patients also experience better postoperative pulmonary function.
