Breast Cancer

Click here to learn more about a new technology that makes it possible for an increasing number of large-breasted women to enjoy the benefits of digital mammography.

The Western Pennsylvania Hospital provides complete breast care services, from screening to confirmation of a suspected diagnosis of breast cancer to a myriad of treatment options that can be tailored to your individual needs.

Diagnoses are coordinated through the Breast Diagnostic Imaging Center and may be made using fine needle aspiration, core needle, mammotome, and surgical biopsies to retrieve samples of breast tumor tissue for testing.

Since 1985, the Breast Diagnostic Imaging Center (BDIC) at The Western Pennsylvania Hospital has been recognized as a leader in providing the most advanced and unique imaging services to women throughout the region.

Accredited by the American College of Radiology and the Food and Drug Administration’s Mammography Quality Standards Act, West Penn’s Center is the first in Pittsburgh dedicated exclusively to breast diagnostic imaging. The staff of the Center is fully certified and highly experienced in performing screening and diagnostic procedures.

Today, the Breast Diagnostic Imaging Center is recognized as a leader in providing the highest quality imaging services with a personal touch.  The Center offers a full-range of breast diagnostic imaging services, including:

• Consultation
• Screening/Diagnostic Mammography
• Breast Ultrasound
• Galactography/Ductoscopy
• Stereotactic core needle biopsy, including Mammotome
• Ultrasound-guided large core biopsy, including Mammotome
• Needle aspiration
• Pre-surgical localization and specimen radiography
• Clip placement prior to neoadjuvant chemotherapy
• Sentinel node injections

Reconstructive procedures for women who have had surgery are another part of breast cancer care at West Penn. Our surgeons work closely with plastic surgeons to provide complete reconstructive care for patients either through an external prosthetic breast, a synthetic implant or your own tissues. Surgeons can obtain abdominal muscles and tissue from a patient that can be shaped like a breast and implanted in the chest. Nipple reconstruction surgery is also available, and the areola can be reconstructed with tattooing.

West Penn provides comprehensive chemotherapy and radiation treatments and our physicians work with the American Cancer Society to provide women with support services after their breast cancer treatments.
